National Consultation Mission for Appliances Scrapping

The Mitigation Enabling Energy Transition in the Mediterranean region (meetMED), EU funded project, in cooperation with the Moroccan Agency for Energy Efficiency – AMEE organized a national consultation mission for appliances scrapping on September 22, 2022, in Morocco.
The mission was held on the sidelines of the 7th Edition of Energy Efficiency African Meetings under the High Patronage of His Majesty King Mohamed VI and the aegis of the Ministry of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development.
The event gathered over 60 Moroccan participants among authorities and experts from Research Institute for Solar Energy and New Energies (IRESEN), Moroccan Agency for Sustainable Energy, Moroccan Agency for Energy Efficiency (AMEE), the Moroccan Ministry of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development as well as a number of national experts.
The focus of this national consultation mission was to identify the potential of collecting, recycling, and marketing the materials from scrapped appliances and the existing programs that may support such market. In particular, the participants discussed the preliminary aspects to fill the gaps related to the scrapping of appliances, scrapping technologies for appliances and the main advantages for the country context, types of materials recycled and the potentiality of exporting, and the challenges facing the availability of scraping-related policies for inefficient appliances.
Implementation of appliances scrapping campaigns and related awareness-raising tools are amongst the major activities of the meetMED project that target the population to getting away from the old high energy-consuming devices. Moreover, promoting the tertiary and public sectors towards efficient alternatives besides informing them and the other key stakeholders in the energy market of the energy saving potential and the opportunities for CO2 emission reduction.
