Algiers – 21 May 2025

Under the theme “Think Smart – Save Water, Save Energy, Recycle E-Waste!”, the meetMED project proudly organized a vibrant “Green Day in Schools” in collaboration with the National Agency for the Promotion and Rationalisation of Energy Use (APRUE) in Agiers. With representatives from Algeria’s National Institution of Energy and local municipalities present, the event took place at TERFI MILOUD Primary School in Isser, Boumerdes. This hands-on, educational event targeted children aged 6–12, focusing on sustainability and smart resource use.

This initiative is part of the meetMED regional awareness campaign aimed at empowering children to become eco-heroes. By promoting water and energy conservation at home and school, as well as sustainable waste management practices, we are fostering a sense of environmental responsibility among the younger generation.

The campaign materials —videos, brochures, and posters—were designed in coordination with  the Portuguese Energy Agency (ADENE), the Energy and Water Agency (EWA) and the Regional Center for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (RCREEE) to highlight the importance of water-energy savings and recycling electronic waste.

Additionally, the campaign installed electronic waste collection boxes in 15 schools across Algerian governates, serving as a sustainable reminder of the proper mechanisms for disposing of hazardous materials contained in e-waste. The day also included a green infrastructure tour (solar water heater, sensor taps, recycling box), a “Green Hero” quiz, and healthy snacks with recommendation to reusable containers.

TERFI MILOUD School also serves as a pilot building for meetMED project national activities in Algeria, including “School Energy Audits” in partnership with ENEA and the “Water-Energy Nexus Methodology” developed by ADENE. Additionally, meetMED project implemented a pilot project aimed at improving water energy efficiency at TERFI MILOUD School through the installation of a solar water heater and low-flow fixtures. This resulted in: Water efficiency: +3.2%; Water-energy nexus: +23.6%

This event was not only educational but a concrete step in showing how pilot buildings and early environmental education go hand in hand in the path toward sustainability.

Tunis – 21 May, 2025

Under the theme “Be Our Hero for E-Waste Recycling” meetMED is excited to announce the launch of an E-waste awareness campaign targeting school students from 15-21 May 2025, across Tunisia.

This initiative is part of the meetMED project, funded by the European Union in collaboration with the Tunisian National Agency for Energy Conservation – ANME  and the Agence Nationale pour la Gestion des Déchets (ANGED). The campaign aims to educate students and the broader community about sustainable waste management practices and to promote environmental responsibility. It focuses on proper disposal methods for electrical and electronic waste, the benefits of recycling, the health and environmental risks associated with e-waste, and the importance of using energy-efficient appliances.

Launched in Sousse city “Elementary School Sahloul Hamam”, the campaign spanned for one week and engaged ten schools across all Tunisian governorates. It includes the production of various awareness materials—videos, brochures, and posters—to highlight the importance of recycling electronic waste.

Additionally, the campaign installed electronic waste collection boxes in each participating school, serving as a sustainable reminder of the proper mechanisms for disposing of hazardous materials contained in e-waste.

The campaign’s activities are set to expand to other countries involved in the project, including Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, and Lebanon, with the goal of fostering a new generation that understands the dangers of electronic waste to the environment.

Looking for Expertise on Sustainable Building in Mediterranean Area for Contributing to a MOOC

Within a unique collaboration between meetMED II along with several EU-funded projects and based on the experience of ADEME, the French Agency for Ecological Transition, a MOOC dedicated on Sustainable Construction in Mediterranean Climate is to be developed in 2023. It is intended for professionals in the construction sector, particularly at the stage of sizing and designing buildings, therefore targeting mainly architects, engineers, students but also potential project owners (urban agencies, executing agencies) by providing basic knowledge to design a sustainable construction project. It takes place in 3 sequences spread over 3 weeks that require about 2 hours of attention per week.

You have relevant expertise in the area of sustainable construction, you’re interested in sharing your knowledge and contribute to capacity building strategy in the MED region. You have experience and robust references in giving trainings and courses on the following topics: engineering skills, architecture, urbanism, environment and climate change topics. You shall join us for participating in the technical expert group (TEG).

Eligible profile & requirements: All profile coming from any country of the region with a dedicated experience of 5 years minimum in MED region are called to apply. A minimum understanding and speaking skills in French and English languages is required.

You will be part of a technical expert group of max 15 persons for revising, adjusting, and participating to a Massive Online Open Course dedicated to sustainable construction in MED area. Your role will be to revise the content of each module, be responsible for the elaboration of additional content, coordinate study cases and video shooting. An indicative level of effort of 10 to 20 days in one year is required for participating to these works. No financial gratification shall be expected for coordination. A symbolic gratification will be proposed for the trainers.

About meetMED

The Mitigation Enabling Energy Transition in the Mediterranean region (meetMED) project is an EU-funded project, developed by the Mediterranean Association of the National Agencies for Energy Management (MEDENER) and the Regional Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (RCREEE).It aims at enhancing the energy security of beneficiary countries (namely Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Palestine and Tunisia) while fostering their transition to low carbon economy. in the targeted countries. MeetMED II activities aim at strengthening the implementation of EE measures and improving countries’ energy mix focusing on building and appliances’ sectors through a multiscale, multi-partner and inclusive approach at local and regional levels, thereby fostering regional cooperation.

The framework of meetMED II “Mitigation enabling energy transition in the Mediterranean region: Focus on Energy Efficient Buildings and Appliances”  project, MEDENER/ADEME in cooperation with RCREEE & Administrative Capital Urban Development (ACUD) organized a Regional Consultation Workshop with the aim to present the planned activities addressed to enhance the development, adaptation and replication of district cooling technology. The event took place on November 17, 2021.

The event brought together key stakeholders and development partners to present relevant action plans, methodology and expected outcomes. It identified possible synergies, challenges and priorities and mobilize efforts to enrich the project’s implementation plan.

Key and relevant national best practices and lessons learned on district cooling deployment in the Mediterranean region were presented allowing experience exchange between NMC and SMC. Additionally, speakers discussed the dissemination of the upcoming capacity development activities in addition to the identification of involved local experts and national stakeholders, the introduction to ongoing national initiatives and the preparation of upcoming activities and meetings.

Event attendance is by invitation only.
